Top Hiking Accessories To Check Before Any Trip

May 10th, 2011 John Spoke

With the weather starting to warm up seasonal hikers and avid hikers alike are relishing the idea of getting outside and hitting the dusty trails, or rocky trails depending on where you intend to travel. However, before you can actually hit the path less taken you need to make sure that you are properly prepared which requires that you check the equipment you have to see if it is ready for the new season and that you purchase the items that you may be missing or need to replace.

One of the first places to get started when it comes to hiking accessories is your shoes, because most likely if you are an active hiker the pair you have has been worn out and is in need of dire replacement before you start out on new adventures. When it comes to hiking shoes you will want to look for several things the first of which is durability and the second of which is a solid grip. Due to the fact that most hiking terrain is varied, you want to make sure that your shoes will offer you the support and the grip you need to make your treks safely without injury or soreness later.

The second thing you may want to take a look at in terms of hiking accessories is your overall safety gear which includes a compass, emergency rations, emergency radio, and/or flares if you often travel off paths and into the woods or forest. If it has been a significant amount of time since you last hiked you most likely will need to replace your pouched food items and water supplies and will need to test your flares and emergency radio to make sure that the fuses are still strong and that the batteries work. Given the fact you can never predict what will happen while hiking; it is always a smart idea to check these items before any hike.

In terms of safety, while checking your emergency supplies it is also recommended that you also check your first aid kit to make sure that it is fully stocked and all ointments, creams, burn solutions, and other items have not passed their expiration date. If you have used bandages or other items from the kit you will also need to make sure that you replace them before heading back out for another hike so that if an injury does occur kilometres away from a checkpoint or ranger station you have the supplies to treat it properly until you can get proper treatment.

Finally, the last aspect of hiking accessories that you will need to consider is also usually the most fun to purchase, new hiking clothes. Everyone loves to shop, so take advantage of the new hiking season to purchase new heavy duty pants, loose fitting shirts, and a proper windbreaker that are free of rips and tears to help protect you as you head out into the unknown for another year or adventure and fun.
